Nearing the end of regulation, the white team takes a 3-point shot and the shooter is fouled. The shot does not go in. The shot was clearly out of the shooter’s hands before time expired. The officials correctly come together to make sure the shot was taken in time and that the shooter was clearly behind the 3-point arc. Note that it’s a 2-point game. The white shooter will now attempt three free throws. The officials should have put at least three-tenths of a second back on the clock. First, you can only have a foul after time expires if an airborne shooter is involved. Second, the free throws would be attempted with players occupying the lane spaces, which would be more competitive for both teams. And finally, in an effort to “ice” the shooter, the opposing team calls successive time outs. Since there is no time on the clock, these successive time outs were incorrectly granted by the crew. Rule 5-11-7: “Successive time-outs shall not be granted after the expiration of playing time for the fourth quarter or any extra period." This play is a clear example of the importance of officials having excellent rule knowledge and applying that knowledge when needed.
